1.  Introduction of Master of Science in Data Science with specialization in Precision Medicine

With the advances in technology, there is an increasing trend in applying large-scale, high-output approaches and techniques in biology and medical research, to generate large data. Hence, a huge amount of data is constantly generated and stored in databases. There is a strong need to process the information and extract knowledge quickly from this rapidly growing collection of data, which defines the discipline of Data Science. Precision Medicine is an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person. Students enrolled in the Master of Science in Data Science (with specialization in Precision Medicine) Programme first comprehend the knowledge in the professional areas such as computer science, statistics, and information technology, and subsequently learn and study how a large pool of data can be practically and effectively applied in Precision Medicine. The programme is a two-year programme, and graduates are well equipped with a strong foundation for a career in an interdisciplinary work in biomedical and big data analytics in the medical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology sectors.

2.  Application Instructions

Students who are interested in applying the Master programme must submit the application through the online application system during the application period. An applicant of a Master’s degree programme must possess a Bachelor’s degree or academic background recognized as equivalent by the University of Macau. Bachelor’s degree related to biomedical sciences, medical sciences, health sciences, biomedical engineering, biological sciences, bioinformatics, biostatistics, statistics or computer science is preferred. Applicants should have achieved the equivalent* of an overall result above Grade B- in the Bachelor’s degree studies.

*Note: The equivalent means 2.8 on the 4.0 GPA scale, 15 on the 20-point scale or 75 out of 100.

Proof of English Proficiency
Applicants who received their Bachelor’s/Master’s degree from a university where the medium of instruction was not English are required to provide any of the following as proof of English proficiency:

  • A Level 6 of the College English Test (CET) score of 430, or
  • A TOEFL* score of 550 (paper-based examination) / 80 (Internet-based examination), or
  • An IELTS* overall score of 6.0 or above with no sub-score lower than 5.5, or
  • A Pass in the Level 4 or Level 8 of the Test for English Majors (TEM).

*Note: TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years from the test date.

4.   Financial Support to PhD Students

UM Master Assistantship
A master student students with good academic performance, research potential and ability may receive an assistantship at MOP8,000 or MOP4,000 per month determined by the supervisor.

5.   Tuition fee and Other Fees

The tuition fee scheme is on programme-based.  In addition, Student Affairs Office offers tuition installment to students who are in financial difficulties.

6.   Accommodation

The Student Resources Section of the Student Affairs Office manages the Postgraduate House (PGH), which mainly offers on-campus accommodation and living services to UM postgraduate students. All the rooms in PGH are fully furnished and air-conditioned, excluding personal necessities and beddings (such as pillow, blanket, coverlet, bed sheet, etc.).
