A delegation from the University of Macau (UM), led by Rector Yonghua Song, recently visited the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) in Portugal. During the visit, Rector Song and ULisboa Rector António da Cruz Serra had an in-depth discussion on collaboration in the area of medical sciences and signed a strategic collaboration agreement. Serra expressed hope that both universities would initiate collaboration in clinical medicine, public health, dental science, and psychiatry. He also expressed hope that UM and ULisboa would jointly establish an international medical school in the future.
Founded in the 13th century, ULisboa is a world-renowned university and the largest public university in Portugal. It is ranked among the top in medicine in the world, with advanced laboratories and world-class research achievements. The partnership between UM and ULisboa in scientific research, academic development, and personnel training is expected to benefit Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond.
In recent years, UM has developed rapidly in medical sciences, with multiple breakthroughs in scientific research. The university is now ranked among the top 1 per cent in Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI) rankings in Clinical Medicine. The precision medicine team from UM’s Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) has achieved major breakthroughs in cancer treatment. Their studies have been published by the authoritative international science journal Nature Communications. Another research team from the same faculty has developed an innovative method to treat skin wounds. The study has been published by the renowned journal Theranostics (Impact factor 8.063). The faculty currently has 30 independent laboratories and ten core experimental facilities.
Other members of the UM delegation include Rui Martins, vice rector (global affairs) of UM; and Xu Renhe, associate dean of the FHS. The delegation also visited ULisboa’s Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Pharmacy.
