The University of Macau (UM) and Zhejiang University signed a new collaborative agreement on the launch of a ‘2+4’ bachelor’s degree programme in biomedical sciences and clinical medicine. Graduates of the programme will receive a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences from UM and a bachelor’s degree in clinical medicine from Zhejiang University. In addition to providing an opportunity for students wishing to pursue a career in medicine to study at a top-tiered university in China, the agreement will help Macao nurture professionals with medical education and accumulate experience in the field, thereby enhancing the overall quality of healthcare in the city.
Zhejiang University is ranked No 3 in mainland China in 2018, with its School of Medicine being recognised as one of the top medical schools in the country. The clinical medicine programme offered by the university attracts many top students from China and abroad every year. The ‘2+4’ programme jointly initiated by UM and Zhejiang University is a six-year bachelor’s degree programme in biomedical sciences and clinical medicine. During the first two years, students will take courses in basic biomedical sciences offered by UM’s Faculty of Health Sciences. Those who are interested in medicine and meet the criteria for academic performance will be recommended for the admission to Zhejiang University’s School of Medicine. During the subsequent four years of studies at Zhejiang University, students will receive training in basic and clinical medicine and serve internships. Upon completing the programme, students will receive a bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences from UM and a bachelor’s degree in clinical medicine from Zhejiang University.
In addition to the innovative ‘2+4’ programme, UM earlier launched a ‘4+X’ programme in collaboration with University of Toronto (UT). According to the agreement with UT, UM graduates who meet the criteria will be recommended for admission to UT’s Faculty of Medicine.
