Abstract | Diabetes is a global epidemic. High glucose is a hallmark to diagnose diabetes, while reducing glucose is a primary goal of diabetes treatment. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is a recently commercialized technology to measure blood glucose levels in real time. Analysis of CGM data from the clinic demonstrated that glucose levels undergo small fluctuations constantly, and that information is encoded in these fluctuations. By applying multiscale entropy (MSE) analysis to clinical CGM data, it was discovered that the dynamics of glucose fluctuations in diabetes is significantly less complex than in healthy subjects. To determine if the same also holds true in preclinical species, CGM studies were performed in normal and diabetic rats as well as mice. Similar to human data, complexity of glucose fluctuations is also decreased in diabetic rodents. Further, low complexity of glucose fluctuations in diabetic animals is not simply a reflection of high glucose values. Entropy values of glucose of ZDF rats are decreased even prior to the onset of overt diabetes. These data lay the foundation to further explore the utility of MSE analysis as a novel predictive biomarker for diabetes. |
