A class of 32 undergraduate students from the Department of Biomedical Sciences of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM) recently visited Kiang Wu Hospital as part of their educational field trip, and were warmly received by Chon Leng LEI, Director of the Clinical Laboratory, Un San FONG and Chi Fong SIU, Deputy Director of the Clinical Laboratory. This excursion was designed to furnish students with pragmatic insights into the healthcare system and augment their comprehension of clinical practices.
The students were given a comprehensive tour of the hospital’s Clinical Laboratory, including specialised medical units such as the Microbiology Laboratory, Biochemistry Laboratory, Immunology Laboratory, Hematology Laboratory, and Blood Bank. They had the opportunity to observe healthcare professionals in action and learn about avant-garde medical technologies and treatment protocols.
Prof Aifang CHENG who organised the field trip, emphasised the importance of such experiences in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. “This visit allows our students to gain firsthand experience of the local healthcare environment, which elevates their understanding of medical culture,” articulated Prof Aifang CHENG.
The students also participated in interactive sessions with the hospital staff, where they discussed various aspects of patient sample collection and processing procedures, hospital sample management, medical diagnostic plans and auxiliary methods, and the challenges faced by healthcare providers. These sessions allowed students to partake in meaningful dialogues with industries, further enriching their educational experience.
FHS is steadfast in its commitment to providing its students with diverse learning opportunities that equip them for successful careers in the health industry. The visit to Kiang Wu Hospital, akin to other field trips, provided students with the chance to learn and analyse relevant knowledge through direct exposure. This hands-on experience is instrumental in enhancing their educational outcomes.
