In an impressive showcase of academic excellence, ten scholars from FHS have been named among the top 2% of scientists globally, as identified in the latest edition of the “Updated Science-wide Author Databases of Standardised Citation Indicators,” compiled by Stanford in the latest results. This prestigious recognition highlights the exceptional calibre of the research teams and their research work conducted at FHS, underscoring its commitment to maintaining world-class standards in scientific inquiry.

The database, developed by a research team led by Prof John IOANNIDIS, were based on indicators, including information on citations, an individual’s scientific research output, co-authorship and a composite indicator for career-long citation impact up to the end of 2023.

It includes the top 2 % of the nearly 7 million researchers considered to be active worldwide. Over 200,000 top scientists globally were grouped into 22 subject fields and 174 sub-fields. The database includes two lists, based on scholars’ career-long (1960-2023) and single-year (2023) impact, recognising their lifetime achievement and recent research impact respectively.

Five FHS scholars entered the career-long list, recognising their significant achievements. Notable mentions include Dean Chuxia DENG, who has achieved exceptional recognition in the career-long rankings, placing 49th among all scientists from China. In the field of Life Sciences, Prof Deng ranks 11th nationally and is placed third in Developmental Biology. Additionally, Associate Dean Hanming SHEN has made significant strides, securing the 32nd position in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology among Chinese scientists in the career-long list. FHS Professor Zhen YUAN, Associate Professors Yunlu DAI and Kin Yip TAM have also been recognised for their sustained contributions to their respective fields, further underscoring the long-term impact of their research. These five FHS scholars have also entered the single-year (2023) list.

In addition to the five impactful FHS scholars, another five scholars have also been recognised in the single-year (2023) list, and they are FHS Professors Henry Hang Fai KWOK, Elaine LEUNG, Yutao XIANG and Wenhua ZHENG, as well as Associate Professor Qi ZHAO. Notably, Prof Xiang has distinguished himself by ranking first among Chinese scientists in Psychiatry in the single-year list.

This recognition not only celebrates the individual achievements of FHS scholars but also highlights the faculty’s pivotal role in advancing knowledge and innovation in health sciences on a global scale. The rankings serve as a powerful affirmation of FHS’s dedication to producing impactful research that resonates within the international academic community.
