Introduction

To promote communication and exchange with academically exceptional Mainland students, and to allow these young scholars to understand the current frontier health science issues, as well as the research and teaching capabilities at the University of Macau (UM), the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at UM will hold the “2025 Health Science Summer Camp for Outstanding Students of Mainland Universities” from 28 to 31 July 2025. This initiative aims to inspire their research interests and attract remarkable students with the potential for further studies.

UM ranks No 180 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, No 14 in the THE Young University Rankings and No 36 in the THE Asia University Rankings. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings, UM ranks No 245. UM’s “Life Sciences” and “Medical and Health” disciplines are ranked between 151 and 175 in THE Rankings by Subjects. Upon the approval of Ministry of Education, UM established the first cutting-edge scientific research centre in Hong Kong and Macao, namely “Frontiers Science Center for Precision Oncology” in 2020, which was led by FHS researchers to carry out cutting-edge scientific research of common cancers in Macao. Another hallmark of the rapid development of FHS is that its relevant disciplines, namely Clinical Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Biology and Biochemistry, Chemistry, Psychiatry/Psychology, and Molecular Biology and Genetics, have entered the top 1% of the International Science Indicators (ESI). The faculty has made significant and sustained contributions in the field of health sciences, with a yearly increase in the quality and quantity of research papers published in prestigious international journals such as Nature, The Lancet, and Advanced Science, rising from 43 papers in 2014 to over 2,400 cumulative papers by December 2024, with citations exceeding 62,000 times, and more than 400 publications with an impact factor above 10.

FHS was established in 2013 and comprises three departments: the Department of Biomedical Sciences, the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Department of Public Health and Medical Administration. The faculty’s ten major research themes are (1) Precision Oncology, (2) Stem Cells and Development, (3) Ageing, Neurological and Metabolic Disorders and Infectious Diseases, (4) Biomedical Imaging, (5) Data Science, (6) Drug Development, (7) Neuropsychiatry, (8) Structural Biology, (9) Translational Medicine, and (10) Public Health. To carry out research in these areas, FHS is equipped with advanced facilities, having established over 40 laboratories, four research centres, and four core facilities, contributing to the research related to health sciences and talent cultivation in the Greater Bay Area.
