In response to the university’s initiative to promote public welfare and health awareness, the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM) actively participated in the ‘Blood Donation in UM Faculties’ campaign on October 13, which was coordinated by the Office of Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs (HSEO). A donation station was set up in the FHS Learning Commons, where students and staff contributed to the cause through their actions, helping to foster a spirit of compassion and support for life-saving efforts. The event was supported by the professional medical team from the Macao Blood Transfusion Centre, ensuring a smooth and safe donation process.

As part of UM’s year-round blood donation campaign, the initiative aimed to raise awareness of the importance of blood donation and encourage voluntary participation to help maintain a stable blood supply for local medical institutions. Meng Io SI, a year 3 student of FHS, shared his experience, saying it was his first time donating blood and he felt both nervous and excited. ‘I missed the previous donation events held at other faculties, so I’m glad this one was organised at FHS. I came right after class, it was very convenient. The medical staff were very professional, which made me feel at ease and gave me a chance to learn more about my own health,’ he says. He described blood donation as a meaningful form of social participation and personal growth, and encouraged fellow students to give it a try.

In addition to receiving commemorative gifts, donors were also provided with their own useful health information by the medical team. Some participants remarked that blood donation is not only a charitable act, but also a way to practise social responsibility.

FHS will continue to collaborate with HSEO to support campus-wide initiatives and promote greater awareness and participation in blood donation, contributing to the well-being of the community.
