The 10th Macau Industrial Products Show (Macau IPS) was held from 3rd to 6th October 2024 at the Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre. During the show, FHS showcased two of its outstanding research achievements: Prof Xuanjun ZHANG’s ion current and fluorescence dual-mode nanosensor, and Prof Zhen YUAN’s personalised rehabilitation programme for brain disorders such as depression and dementia.
Prof Zhang’s research focuses on the development of fluorescent probes and nanosensors. This project uses the amplification effect of nanopores on ion currents and the detection technology of fluorescent probes to develop a series of new optical-electrical dual-signal sensors with high sensitivity and accuracy. These nanosensors have been applied to the detection of environmental pollutants such as mercury ions, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide and biomolecules with excellent performance. Nanosensors can be used for the detection of environmental pollution, quality testing of Chinese medicinal materials, and disease screening. Prof Yuan’s research found that transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) uses near-infrared light to directly irradiate the brain through the scalp. Once absorbed by neurons, these photons can enhance cellular metabolism and reduce inflammatory responses, thereby improving symptoms of depression. Furthermore, this therapy is believed to increase blood flow in brain regions, enhance neural plasticity, and effectively improve emotional regulation, offering new hope for patients with depression.
FHS has featured at Macau IPS for the fifth consecutive year, to not only showcasing the faculty’s research achievements but also conveying the latest developments in health sciences to the general public, enhancing locals’ understanding and awareness of health sciences, and contributing to the development of technological innovation and health services in Macao.
