The Ministry of Education Frontiers Science Center for Precision Oncology, University of Macau (FSCPO) at the University of Macau (UM) successfully held its 5th Annual Retreat, bringing together over 100 scholars, researchers and students to explore the latest developments in life sciences, medicine, and oncology, and to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
During the retreat, Rector Yonghua SONG highly commended FSCPO for its outstanding achievements since its establishment, and reaffirmed UM’s full support for its future development. He emphasised the FSCPO’s pivotal role in UM’s overall strategic layout and its close connection with the upcoming Faculty of Medicine. Chuxia DENG, Chief Scientist of FSCPO, outlined the center’s key research areas, recent scientific progress and the challenges ahead, providing participants with a clear picture of the frontiers in precision oncology.
The programme featured a comprehensive lineup of activities, including 18 oral presentations, poster session, and interactive discussions. Highlights included presentations by esteemed professors such as Prof Deng, who discussed ‘Challenges and Opportunities, New Strategies, and Improved Therapies’, and Chair Professor Hanming SHEN, who presented on ‘Targeting Glucose Metabolism as a Novel Strategy of Precision Therapy for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer’. These sessions provided valuable insights into cutting-edge topics such as precision cancer therapies, immune regulation, and tumour microenvironments.
The poster session showcased 43 innovative research projects, ranging from cancer immunotherapy and drug resistance to neuroimmunology and nanotechnology-based treatments. These projects, led by talented researchers and students, underscored the university’s commitment to transformative research and innovation. The retreat concluded with closing remarks by Kathy Qian LUO, College Master of Stanley Ho East Asia College and Professor of FSCPO, who emphasised the significance of precision oncology research and expressed confidence that the center will achieve more groundbreaking results in the future.
