Recently, the University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) and Huitong College of Beijing Normal University (BNU) jointly organised a student exchange event themed ‘Cross-Regional Academic Collaboration’. The event aimed to promote academic exchange in the field of health sciences between the two institutions and to enhance friendship and cooperation among the students.
During the event, students visited each other’s faculties and colleges. The students from BNU explored the core facilities of FHS, experiencing its research environment and advanced scientific equipment firsthand. They also visited Ma Man Kei and Lo Pak Sam College (MLC), appreciating its diverse student activities and comprehensive facilities. Conversely, the students of FHS visited Huitong College of BNU, exploring its unique ‘college system’ educational model and experiencing its rich academic atmosphere. These mutual visits provided both sides with a deeper understanding and appreciation of each other’s academic resources and cultural characteristics.
Additionally, students engaged in in-depth discussions on cutting-edge topics in the field of health sciences, sharing their academic experiences and research achievements. FHS Assistant Dean Xuanjun ZHANG stated that the core concept of this event was to break geographical boundaries and promote innovative thinking. He believes that cross-regional academic exchanges can broaden students’ horizons and inspire creativity and collaboration in scientific research.
Jingwen ZHANG, a third-year student from BNU, expressed that this was her first visit to UM. She is particularly interested in the application of data science in life and health sciences and hopes to engage in in-depth discussions with professors and students at UM through this exchange event. During the exchange, she deeply realised the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and began to consider how to apply her skills in mathematical modeling and statistical analysis to research in medical imaging and genomic analysis.
Wenyu LIAO, a fourth-year student from FHS, shared his deep friendship with students from BNU, which began during their joint participation in an international competition in their sophomore year. He stated that this exchange event not only enhanced his self-expression skills but also gave him the opportunity to witness the outstanding achievements of his peers in scientific research. This experience has made him more aware of his own shortcomings and has strengthened his determination to continuously improve his professional skills and leverage his strengths, preparing for future academic or career development.
Songhan YANG, President of FHS Student Association, hopes that such events will enable students from different regions to understand each other, learn together, and advance hand in hand in academic research. The successful organisation of this exchange event has not only built a bridge of friendship between students from the two institutions but also laid a solid foundation for deeper academic cooperation in the future.
