To ease students into a fulfilling and enriching start to university life, the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM) held five orientation sessions for nearly 400 doctoral, Master’s and undergraduate students enrolled for the 2024/2025 academic year.

During the orientation sessions, FHS Dean Chuxia Deng welcomed the students and encouraged them to embrace new knowledge, dare to innovate, and strive to exceed their own limits. He also introduced the history of the faculty and shared some learning advices and strategies. Associate Dean (Teaching) Hanming Shen provided detailed information about the requirements of the PhD in Biomedical Sciences programme, while Assistant Dean (Student Affairs) Xuanjun Zhang introduced the Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Association (FHSGA) and the relevant services provided by the association. Head of the Department of Public Health and Medicinal Administration Yutao Xiang, and Programme Coordinator Terence Poon provided detailed information about the MSc in Global Public Health and MSc in Data Science with specialization in Precision Medicine respectively.

Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences Henry Kwok, Deputy Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Ligen Lin, and Prof. Yutao Xiang held orientations for the undergraduate students of the three departments. They introduced practical course information, learning resources and the teaching cast, in hopes of helping the new students adapt integrate quickly into the vastly different university life. The orientations included Q&A sessions, allowing students to interact with professors and current students, and gain a deeper understanding of their chosen majors. The representatives of the Faculty of Health Sciences Student Association (FHSSA) also outlined their organisational structure and services provided to the undergraduate students.

The opening ceremony and orientation for the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) programme marked an important milestone for the Faculty as the inaugural class of this programme, with 25 top professionals from the public health and healthcare sector forming the maiden cohort.
