Led by Assistant Professor Aifang CHENG, 25 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM) recently embarked on an educational field trip to Kiang Wu Hospital to deepen their understanding of the healthcare system. The group was warmly welcomed by Chon Leng LEI, Director of the Clinical Laboratory, and Un San FONG, Associate Senior Technologist of the Clinical Laboratory.
During the visit, the students were given a comprehensive tour of the hospital’s Clinical Laboratory, including specialised medical units such as the Microbiology Laboratory, Biochemistry Laboratory, Immunology Laboratory, Hematology Laboratory, and Blood Bank. They had the opportunity to observe healthcare professionals in action and learn about avant-garde medical technologies and treatment protocols.
Prof Aifang CHENG emphasised the importance of such experiences in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical application. ‘This visit allows our students to gain firsthand experience of the local healthcare environment, which elevates their understanding of medical culture,’ articulated Prof Cheng.
The students also participated in interactive sessions with the hospital staff, where they discussed various aspects of patient sample collection and processing procedures, hospital sample management, medical diagnostic plans, and auxiliary methods, as well as the challenges faced by healthcare providers. These sessions enabled students to engage in meaningful dialogues with clinical professionals, further enriching their educational experience.
FHS is steadfast in its commitment to providing its students with diverse learning opportunities that equip them for successful careers in the health industry. The visit to Kiang Wu Hospital, akin to other field trips, provided students with the chance to learn and analyse relevant knowledge through direct exposure. This hands-on experience is instrumental in enhancing their educational outcomes.
