FHS took part in the 8th Macau Industrial Products Show at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre from 30 September to 3 October 2022. Prof. Guokai CHEN and Prof. Wenhua ZHENG presented their outstanding research work on technological development and applications of keratinocyte differentiation from human pluripotent stem cells and the therapeutic effect of artemisinin drugs on Alzheimer’s disease in the booth of UM respectively.

Prof. Guokai Chen focuses on developing new technologies using human pluripotent stem cells (PSCs). hPSCs can proliferate without limit and can generate all cell types in human body. Prof. Chen’s research team established a novel method to induce skin keratinocytes with proper embryonic origin. This method does not use any animal materials in differentiation, so the cell product will have wide potentials in clinical or cosmetic applications. Prof. Wenhua ZHENG showed that artemisinin and its derivatives can inhibit the growth and metastasis of tumour cells and prolong the survival time of animals. The participants also learnt that Artemisinin derivatives can kill several drug-resistant tumours, delay the formation of tumour drug resistance, and enhance the anti-tumour immune function of the animals.

The 8th Macau Industrial Products Show, organized by the Industrial Association of Macau,   aimed at promoting economic diversification and developing Macao local brands. The show contained six exhibition areas and covered nearly 200 booths. UM set up its booth in the show to showcase its impressive scientific results, targeting to enhance public understanding of UM’s research and explore more opportunities for industry-academia collaboration.
