Professors and students of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) of the University of Macau (UM) recently visited the Islands Healthcare Complex – Macao Medical Center of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (Macao Union Medical Center), to enhance their understanding of clinical pathology and modern diagnostic processes through on-site observation and professional exchange. The visit involved second-year undergraduate students, accompanied by FHS Professor Duncan Chung Hang LEUNG, Associate Professor Leo Tsz On LEE and Assistant Professor Li WANG.

The delegation was warmly received by Yu XIAO, Director of the Department of Pathology at the Macau Medical Centre of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, together with Doctor Ruirui FAN and Doctor Dongmei LI. FHS members and students first viewed an introductory video outlining the Center’s development vision, highlighting its integration of medical resources and professional expertise from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and its commitment to providing high-quality medical services to Macao and the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area. This was followed by an overview of the construction and operation of the Department of Pathology presented by Director Xiao. Dr Fan then explained the fundamental principles of surgical specimen sampling and the critical role of pathological diagnosis in clinical decision-making.

During the laboratory visit, FHS members under the guidance of Director Xiao, observed slides of normal and tumour tissues using multi-head microscopes. This enabled them to identify the morphological characteristics of tumour cells and understand key diagnostic criteria. In addition, Dr Li introduced the complete workflow of pathological examination, from clinical specimen processing to staining and analysis, and demonstrated several automated pathological testing systems, providing students with insights into the technological advancements of modern pathological diagnosis.

In the subsequent discussion session, FHS members engaged in in-depth exchanges with the pathology team on the scope of clinical pathology work, professional competencies and future career development. Some students commented that the visit had significantly deepened their understanding of clinical pathological diagnostic procedures, strengthened the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical application, and would be of considerable benefit to their future studies and professional development.
