The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) took part in the 9th Macau Industrial Products Show at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf Convention and Exhibition Centre from 29 September to 2 October 2023. Prof. Guokai CHEN presented his research accomplishment on “Novel Evaluation Assays for Cosmetic Products Based on Keratinocyte Derived from Pluripotent Stem Cells” while Prof. Elaine Lai Han LEUNG showcased her research achievements on  “Chinese Medicine San Tong Shun Qi Pills” and “Chinese Medicine Compound Appetizer Powder” in the booth of UM respectively.

Prof. Chen’s research team focuses on the technology development of keratinocyte differentiation. His group has established a stage-wise differentiation platform to produce keratinocytes from human pluripotent stem cells. These keratinocytes are being used to develop novel evaluation assays for cosmetic products. Prof. Leung’s research group found that San Tong Shun Qi Pills can regulate gut homeostasis, induce antiviral immune responses and alleviate post-flu symptoms. Her research team also obtained Chinese Medicine Compound Appetizer Powder by optimising the early identified Chinese medicine compound, which can reduce lung inflammation and accelerate postoperative recovery by regulating gut microbiota.

The 9th Macau Industrial Products Show, organised by the Industrial Association of Macau,   aimed at promoting economic diversification and developing Macao local brands, covering more than 200 booths. A total of 18 research projects developed and incubated by the UM were displayed in the MinM Macao Industrial Complex to showcase its impressive scientific results, targeting to enhance public understanding of UM’s research and explore more opportunities for industry-academia collaboration.
